Frequently Asked Questions

How does ordering work?

All ordering is done through my website: threadandsprout.com

For questions about your order, tutorial links, or custom orders, please email info@threadandsprout.com

What are “Ready-to-Ship” Items?

Every once in a while there will be a ready-to-ship shop update. These pieces are already made and ready to ship. There will be shop previews for these pieces available before the shop is live.

All pieces will have a full product description. Please read through all product details before purchasing as these pieces are all one-of-a-kind.

Find out when these shop updates are by subscribing to the Thread + Sprout newsletter.

Paid substack subscribers receive one hour of early access to the shop updates.

Ready-to-Ship purchases will ship within 7 business days of purchase.

Ready-to-Ship pieces are available to ship to the US and Canada only.

What are Made-to-Order Items?

Approximately once a month or so there will be a made-to-order shop update. These pieces have not been made yet and are sewn for you once they have been purchased. Limited quantities will be available

When you order you will choose your size (either one of my set sizes or a custom size) before you check out.

Made-to-order items take up to 9 weeks (sometimes a little longer) to make and be shipped.

See previous made-to-order pieces here.

Made-to-order pieces are available to ship to the US and Canada only.

Can I get a custom piece?

You are able to submit a custom order request through the form on the Custom Order page. I only accept custom orders for pieces that are my own patterns and designs. You will hear within 1-2 weeks whether or not I am able to accept your project, and will respond with any additional questions and a quote.

We will then work together to design your dream piece. You will receive a digital mockup for your custom order. This is a digital sketch made on a computer - your final design will of course be made of fabric which means that the colors and final design may vary slightly different than the mockup. I try to be as close to the mockup as possible, but variations in how things work out in real life and when cutting fabric, especially while minimizing fabric waste, are to be expected.

Once the design and quote are approved, I will send you an invoice for the piece. Full payment is due at that time. Once paid, your order will be added to the queue.

Production time for custom orders is between 6-9 weeks (may occasionally be longer).

Custom pieces include but are not limited to:

  • fiber art

  • dresses

  • tops

  • vests

  • jackets

  • robes/dusters

  • tunics

  • kerchiefs

  • home décor such as pillowcases or bedspreads

All of these are available in custom color combinations.

Dresses, tops, and tunics are available in custom sleeve lengths.

Custom orders are available internationally.

Where do you ship?

Items in ready-made and made-to-order shop updates can be shipped to the US and Canada. These include made-to-order items, ready-made items, and art.

Custom orders can be shipped almost everywhere in the world. For custom orders going to somewhere in the US and Canada, you will work with us on a design and then place your order through a private page on the website and pay for shipping there. If you live outside of the US and Canada and are placing a custom order, you will receive an invoice after we finalize the design to pay for the piece, shipping, and customs/VAT fees if applicable. International customers will be responsible for paying for the actual cost of shipping and customs fees (you will be given an estimate before receiving the invoice so there is no surprise). International shipping is new to us so please be patient as we work out the quirks :)

How are your pieces sized?

My sizing is a little bit different than you may be used to!

Check out the sizing page for the full size charts.

As of now, most ready-to-ship pieces usually come in four sizes:

1 - ptp measurement of ~21 inches

2 - ptp measurement of ~24 inches

3 - ptp measurement of ~28 inches

4 - ptp measurement of ~32 inches

(ptp = pit to pit measurement of the garment taken flat, double that number for the bust/chest circumference of the top/dress)

Made-to-order and custom pieces are also available in sizes 1, 2, 3, and 4 as well as a “custom” option so you can enter your measurements.

For optimal flowy-ness of the tops and dresses, I recommend choosing a size that has a bust/chest circumference that is 6-10 inches more than your own.

When ordering a piece from me, please read through the sizing and fit info on each product page carefully to make sure you are choosing the right size for you. You can also always send me your measurements and I’ll suggest the best size for you depending on the piece and its intended fit.

How are things priced?

(all prices in USD) Prices are determined by the cost of materials, the amount of labor that goes into making the piece, and covering other business expenses such as health insurance, rent, office and packaging supplies, education, software, etc. Prices will vary depending on the piece and design but on average the prices are around:

  • Pillowcases: $60 - 85

  • Kerchiefs: $50 - 80

  • Short sleeve shirts: $145-175

  • Long sleeve shirts: $165 - $185

  • Tunics: $220 - $275

  • Dresses: $325 - $450 (with gathered skirt)

  • Shift dress (no gathered skirt and custom order only): $245-325

  • Jackets (Custom order only): $600 - $1000

  • Magic Vests: $400-600

  • Wall hangings and quilts: $400 - $2000+

Pieces that do not have as many curved color-blocking sections or are painted may be lower than this. Adding appliqué details or hand stitching increases the cost.

“Scrappy patchy” made with pieced patchwork are more because of the amount of time and labor they require (they range between $275-400 for tops and $550-800 for dresses).

Can I return or exchange my piece?

I do not offer returns or refunds as I am a one-person team and everything is made by me (Justice). I sometimes can offer an exchange for a different size, if I have enough material, or can alter a piece to be a different size (if it needs to be smaller). That being said, please please please double check the size before ordering so that we can avoid that :) I cannot offer exchanges for custom orders.

Can I cancel my made-to-order or custom order?

I know that changes in mind and financial status happen often. If I haven’t started your order yet, I can cancel your made-to-order piece however please keep in mind that I am an individual person and the sales from my business pay my bills, so cancellations can be quite challenging for me as I plan my bill schedules and other payments around how many orders I have at once. So, please be really sure before you place an order so that you don’t have to cancel it later on. Custom orders can be considered for cancellation depending on the amount of design work went into it.

What are your pieces made of?

Linen! And sewn with cotton thread.

The colors seem a little different from piece to piece, is that normal?

Yes! Colors may vary depending on the availability of a color of fabric as I try to first use what I have at hand. Colors may also vary from how they appear on screens. If there is a shade you particularly want for a custom piece, please reach out and I’ll see if I have it available.

Where do you source your fabric?

I get my linen from a number of places. I try to get as much of my fabric as possible from some local deadstock fabric stores (meaning the remnants of fabric that is left on the bolt - which is why I have a limited quantity of some colors). I also use a few different online linen suppliers who are OEKO-TEX 100 certified or produce in eco-friendly manners. Some of this linen is from Belgium and some from Eastern Europe (primarily Lithuania).

How do I care for the pieces?

For most pieces I recommend washing cold and hang drying. Items with appliqué details should be washed extra carefully.

My piece is kind of stiff, how do I get it to be flowy?

When you first get your piece, it may not fit how you think it should and may be kind of stiff. This is normal! Linen softens over time and the piece will get more flowy and soft over time. You can put the piece in the dryer with a wet washcloth for a quick run when you first get it to start the softening and to ease out the creases from shipping. This will also help you get a better sense of how the piece fits since sometimes when it is still stiff and creased, it can look like it doesn’t fit as well :)

Can I make something inspired by your work?

Yes! Please do! I love when people are inspired by me and/or my work to make things themselves. That being said, please do not make things directly inspired by my work to sell or profit off of. I do offer a few tutorials for making your own Thread + Sprout inspired things - please check them out!

Do you sell patterns?

I do not sell patterns. I do have online tutorials available for purchase where we walk through how to create a pattern for yourself for the piece

I ordered the tutorial but didn’t receive the links

Sometimes technology is tricky! When you order the tutorials, an email is automatically sent after your order confirmation email with the links to download the PDFs and access the video (if there is one). If you don’t get the email within a couple of hours, first please check your spam or junk folders. If you still haven’t found it, please send an email to info@threadandsprout.com with your order number and we’ll forward you the links.

Some things to remember:

I am an individual human being. If you are asking a question or sending an inquiry or waiting for a made-to-order piece, please be kind and patient. If you are rude, I may just not respond.

I (Justice) am the only person running this business. Because of that, it can take a while to make things! Production time for most projects can be up to 9 weeks. If you have questions about your order, please email info@threadandsprout.com and we will get back to you as soon as we are able.
