Sewing as Ritual

In this class, I will be teaching you how to make your own Thread + Sprout style "Magic Vest". A Magic Vest is a soft, quilted vest made to represent a prayer, spell, dream, or wish. It could be a prayer for protection or gratitude or a spell for something you'd like to see come to pass.

We will discuss techniques for adding appliqué to garments, the basics of curved color blocking, some embroidery stitches, and an introduction to color theory and design.

We will also explore ways to bring ritual, ceremony, and magic into your creative practice and how to use your sewing practice as a tool for mindfulness, presence, intention, and embodiment.

We will talk about the importance of ritual and ceremony and how to bring a spiritual and "meaning making" element into our creative practice.

FAQs

  • I want this class to be accessible to sewists of all levels, however, I recommend having some prior sewing experience. So, I'd say it's best for ambitious beginners through advanced sewists.

Before signing up please make sure you:

    • know how to sew a straight stitch

    • are familiar with using a pattern

    • are familiar with how your machine works and what quirks it may have

    • are familiar with how to wind your bobbin and thread your machine

    • know how to change the stitch length

    • are familiar with basic sewing terms like: seam allowance, bias tape, basting stitch, stitch length

  • You will need basic sewing supplies and a fabric of your choice. You will get a detailed list of materials after you sign up.

However, the magic vest is about your personal spell and intentions, so feel free to choose materials that resonate with you.

  • The end result will really be up to you and the unique design you come up with!

You will receive a pattern for the vests. The basic shape of the vest is a kind of cropped boxy fit with a tie at the front. You are welcome to use a different pattern for this class if there is a vest pattern you have already used and like.

For this class, the Magic Vests will be making will include three different appliqué details:

    • A circular landscape portal on the back

    • An earthly symbol - something of the flora or fauna variety

    • A celestial element - a planet, the moon, the sun, or a star

We will then add embroidered words, little symbols or designs and some extra hand stitching to tie all the magic together. Of course, you are welcome to do whatever you want and can choose to change up the design/leave some things out/use different techniques/etc.

  • The live calls will be through Zoom.

The calls will be 2 hours long and will include a demonstration portion where I will show you the technical skills and techniques we are focusing on that module.

We will also spend some of the video call time talking about ritual, magic, embodiment, mindfulness, symbolism, color theory and other topics that may come up. You are not required to attend the calls as they will be recorded and you can watch them later. AND you are not required to participate in the conversation or have your camera on (i'll never call on you without you indicating you want to talk first) ;)

  • If you are taking this class live, the live video calls will be on Wednesdays for six weeks in a row.

The first live call will be on August 13th from 3 - 5 pm PT.

Important: you are not required to attend all the live classes! All the content will be uploaded to the class dashboard including recordings of the calls, so you can do this class at your own pace and at a time that works best for you.

    Live call schedule:

    Wednesday, August 13th 3-5 pm PT // 4-6 pm MT // 5-7 pm CT // 6-8 pm ET

    Wednesday, August 20th 3-5 pm PT // 4-6 pm MT // 5-7 pm CT // 6-8 pm ET

    Wednesday, September 17th 3-5 pm PT // 4-6 pm MT // 5-7 pm CT // 6-8 pm ET

  • These are the skills and topics I will be covering. Some of this may be familiar to you and some may be brand new. The "spiritual + energetic skills" aren't so much skills but just suggestions of things to think about when you are thinking about your creative practice. I am not a trained teacher, and I am not even "technically" a trained sewist or designer although I have put in a lot of time sewing, I am not a therapist, I am not a counselor or coach, but I am a human being who has spent a lot of time developing creative practice and who has spent a lot of time thinking about how to bring more meaning and intention into everything I do. Some of this may be new or maybe even uncomfortable with you. I trust you to "take what you like and leave the rest".

Testimonials

  • This was an inspiring, educational and fun class. I've never taken an online sewing class but this one was wonderful - it fostered community and Justice was a lovely host! Justice was very patient, open to questions, well-prepared and all 'round great teacher.

  • Vest class truly was so magical ~ from the lessons on colour theory, symbolism and textiles, to the community I found with everyone who attended the calls; I felt so deeply inspired to be authentic, connected + creative. The beautiful vest I made speaks volumes to how amazing Justice is at what she does, the wonderful way she teaches, and the way in which she shows up for the creative community.

    Millie

  • Magic Vest class has been a perfect way to close out the year in community, with intention & creativity...I have thoroughly enjoyed the slow process & especially the grace & encouragement you lead the class with. Thank you, Justice!

    Julie

  • I’m so glad that I decided to take Justice‘s magic vest class. In addition to learning the practical skills needed to make my own vest, I came away with a newfound appreciation for working on projects slowly and with intention, thanks to Justice’s prompts. I really appreciated the additional lessons on topics like color theory, community, and symbols, but most of all it was such a joy to spend those 2 hours each week in community with like-minded sewists. And I have worn my vest every single day since finishing it!

    Cassidy

  • This class was such a great experience!! Justice is a wonderful teacher and graciously shares her art and knowledge. She creates a positive environment for all students and is very encouraging and available for questions. The calls are awesome and there is a lot of back up material provided so if you want to revisit the course material at any point you have many options to do so. It was wonderful to be part of this special group.

  • This class was not only a space to get creative but also to connect with like minded individuals. Justice provided a safe space for us to be vulnerable and create meaningful connections while putting an intention into a carefully crafted piece of armor. I am looking forward to taking more classes from Justice and rocking my badass magic vest.
