Sewing as a metaphor for life.

How we do one thing is how we do all things. So let’s practice going a little slower, being a little more present, and expanding our capacity for play, joy, and compassion.

In this class, we are going to practice breaking the rules. But we are also going to hold things sacred.

We will explore finding the treasure amid the “trash” and make a meaningful, beautiful object from scraps.

We will create our own Soft Armor by piecing together fabric in an improvisational, free-form way to create a quilt top. We will then quilt the fabric with slow stitching before binding it all together into a wearable garment.

In this class, we will be challenging our inner critic and perfectionist.

We will intentionally break rules, make mistakes, and celebrate differences and “flaws”.

what we will cover…

  • CREATIVE SEWING

    Learn some new techniques, including: creating a cohesive color palette, improvisational + free-form piecing, hand + machine quilting, embroidery, needle turn appliqué, and more!

  • BREAKING THE RULES

    Learn to challenge the inner critic and perfectionist. We will intentionally break rules, make mistakes, and celebrate differences and “flaws”. And we will practice meeting ourselves with compassion and curiosity along the way.

  • MINDFUL CRAFTING

    We will explore ways to bring mindfulness and embodiment practices into our sewing process. We will also talk about the history of quilts as tools of resistance and explore how sewing, quilting and crafting can be tools for self and community care

FAQs

  • I want this class to be accessible to sewists of all levels, however, I recommend having some prior sewing experience. So, I'd say it's best for ambitious beginners through advanced sewists.

    Before signing up please make sure you:

    • know how to sew a straight stitch

    • are familiar with using a pattern

    • are familiar with how your machine works and what quirks it may have

    • are familiar with how to wind your bobbin and thread your machine

    • know how to change the stitch length

    • are familiar with basic sewing terms like: seam allowance, bias tape, basting stitch, stitch length

  • You will get a detailed list of materials after you sign up. But at the very least you will need:

    • a sewing machine that can sew a straight stitch

    • a pile of scraps of woven fabrics (or a selection of fabrics to use to piece your quilt)

    • fabric for the lining (about 2 yards should be enough)

    • batting

    • embroidery floss

    • fabric for the bias tape (about a yard should be good)

    • general sewing supplies (pins, scissors, fabric chalk, thread, etc)

  • Yes! The Soft Armor pattern is included. You can read all about the pattern itself here.

    The Soft Armor you make will be unique to you and can include or not include the hood.

  • The live calls will be through Zoom.

    The calls will be 2 hours long and will include a demonstration portion where I will show you the technical skills and techniques we are focusing on that module.

    We will also spend some of the video call time talking about mindfulness and movement practices to support your creative practice, sewing as a tool for self-inquiry, quilting as an act of resistance, and what to do when judgement and self-criticism start to get loud and SO MUCH MORE.

    You are not required to attend the calls, as they will be recorded and you can watch them later. AND you are not required to participate in the conversation or have your camera on (I'll never call on you without you indicating you want to talk first) ;)

  • If you are taking this class live, the live video calls will be on Tuesdays for six weeks in a row.

    The first live call will be on October 6th from 3 - 5 pm PT.

    Important: you are not required to attend all the live classes! All the content will be uploaded to the class dashboard including recordings of the calls, so you can do this class at your own pace and at a time that works best for you.

Hi! I’m Justice

I’m a self-employed fiber artist, movement teacher, creative guide, and ever-evolving human. I’ve been sewing since I was five and made it my full-time work in 2021.

My practice lives at the intersection of craft, mindfulness, and magic: a place where making is more about the process than the outcome. I believe that creating with our hands and hearts helps us move through the world with more awe, wonder, and integrity.

I love making things myself, but even more than that, I love teaching others — encouraging people to learn new skills, listen to their innate creativity, and ask, “What else is possible?” I teach from the belief that we are all creative, that creativity is an act of resistance, and that there’s no one “right” way to make.

I’m not a trained educator or a therapist. I am a person who’s spent a lot of time at a sewing machine, in her own head, and trying to find as much awe and wonder in this broken world as she can. Everything I teach comes from my lived experience.

If you join me in a class, be prepared for some silliness, some fumbling, some tangents, and a whole lot of heart.
