Want to make your own clothes but feeling overwhelmed by all the options? Inherited a sewing machine, but don’t know where to start? Watched all the YouTube videos and still confused by patterns and fabric choices?
You are in the right place!
In this beginner-friendly class, I’ll guide you through the foundational skills you need to start sewing your own garments, from understanding stitches and reading patterns to picking out your fabric.
We’ll cover:
The main stitches used in garment construction
How to read and follow a sewing pattern
Common sewing terms and tools
How fabric is made and how to choose it for your projects
How to fix mistakes and troubleshoot as you go
And along the way, you’ll make your own cute, comfy, boxy top — a perfect first project!
This course includes 5 live 2-hour video classes, thorough written instruction and resources, and connection to a supportive community.

Yes!
We will be learning machine sewing in this class so yes you will need a sewing machine. It doesn’t need to be a fancy one, just one that works. If you don’t have a sewing machine of your own, maybe ask a friend or family member if you can borrow theirs or see if your library has a tool lending program.

All machines are different!
I will help troubleshoot common problems that arise with most sewing machines (like fixing thread tension, what to do when your stitches are skipping and what to do when a needle breaks) but I will not be addressing specific issues for each different machine.
I encourage you to play around with your machine, read its manual and learn all about its wonderful features and specific quirks.

The first live call will be on Wednesday, August 12th from 3 - 5 pm PT / 6 - 8 pm ET.
Important: you are not required to attend all the live classes! All the content will be uploaded to the class dashboard, including recordings of the calls, so you can do this class at your own pace and at a time that works best for you.

A full supply list will be provided once you sign up, but to start, you’ll need:
a sewing machine that can sew a straight stitch (and a zig-zag stitch is helpful too)
fabric scissors
Paper scissors
An iron
An ironing board
pins
all-purpose thread
a ruler
1-1.5 yards of light or midweight non-stretch woven fabric (we will talk about choosing your fabric in class 1)

That’s okay! All classes are recorded and uploaded to the class dashboard, which you will have lifetime access to.

Yes! As a member of the class, you’ll be invited to join a Discord server where you’ll get to chat with fellow Start to Stitch students as well as ask me questions outside of the class calls :)

Yes! The Thread + Sprout Foundation Pattern is included with your class sign up.
The Foundation Pattern fits bust/chest measurements of about 32” to 67”. If you need a size not included in the pattern, I will be happy to grade the pattern for you! -

Hi! I’m Justice
I’m a self-employed fiber artist, movement teacher, creative guide, and ever-evolving human. I’ve been sewing since I was five and made it my full-time work in 2021.
My practice lives at the intersection of craft, mindfulness, and magic: a place where making is more about the process than the outcome. I believe that creating with our hands and hearts helps us move through the world with more awe, wonder, and integrity.
I love making things myself, but even more than that, I love teaching others — encouraging people to learn new skills, listen to their innate creativity, and ask, “What else is possible?” I teach from the belief that we are all creative, that creativity is an act of resistance, and that there’s no one “right” way to make.
I’m not a trained educator or a therapist. I am a person who’s spent a lot of time at a sewing machine, in her own head, and trying to find as much awe and wonder in this broken world as she can. Everything I teach comes from my lived experience.
If you join me in a class, be prepared for some silliness, some fumbling, some tangents, and a whole lot of heart.
