Double Knee Dance Pants Hack

Want to add a Double Knee detail to your Dance Pants? It’s pretty easy!

This pair of dance pants was made of Matchy Matchy linen

To add Double Knee patches to your Dance pants you need:

• The Dance Pants pattern

• The required fabric

• Approximately 1/2 to 3/4 yard of contrast fabric for the Double Knee patches

• some large paper to create your Double Knee Patch pattern piece

Prep the pattern piece

Use the pants front pattern piece. Trace the Pant Front pattern onto a large piece of paper or use tracing paper.

Shorten from the top

Measure ~14” down from the top of the waist, draw a line parallel to the waist, and cut along that line.

Shorten from the bottom

Measure ~8” from the bottom of the pants leg, draw a line parallel to the hem, and cut along that line.

Trim along the side

Trim the new pattern piece to be about 1.5” narrower than the original pattern along the outseam edge.

You now have the pattern piece for the Double Knee Patch

This pattern piece follows the shape of your pant from but is shorter and slightly narrower. It already includes 1/2” seam allowances on each side.

Cut the fabric

Cut the fabric for your Pant Fronts, Pant Backs, and Double Knee Patches. Mark your notches on all pieces.

Prep + Pin

On your Double Knee Patch pieces, fold the raw edges along the top, crotch curve, inner side, and bottom towards the wrong side of the fabric by ½” and press. You may want to use a basting stitch to help fold along the curved edges.

Place the double knee patch on top of the Pants Front with the wrong side of the Double knee patch facing the right side of the Pant Fronts.

The top of the knee patch should be about 4” below the bottom notch for the pockets. Line up the outseams of the Pant Fronts and Double Knee Patches.

Pin in place.

Sew in place!

Top stitch the Double Knee patches to the Pant Fronts sewing ~⅛” from the folded edge.

Ta-da! Your double knee patches are attached! Now construct the Dance Pants as you normally would. The outer edge of the double knee patches will be sewn into the outseams of the pants.
